Well guys, we made through another college football season. And it was awesome. No matter who you are a fan of, there were guaranteed ups and downs. Now as most of you who read this blog know that I am and avid Mississippi State fan and have asked me about my thoughts on this season. If I chose to answer you at all I probably gave you a short answer that might have even seemed rude, and I apologize for that. But there was a reason...
When watching the last seconds of the Gator Bowl against Northwestern, I had a lot of rage built up. I couldn't wait to sit down and write a blog piece on how terrible the season ended and who should be fired. But then something came over me. I convinced to wait 2 weeks before writing anything, and if I felt the same way at the end of those 2 weeks, then so be it and I would write a piece slamming this season. What took place in those two weeks might surprise a lot of people.
The word that came to mind as I pondered these last two weeks was: PERSPECTIVE. I'll try and let you in on some of that perspective. When I argue with someone about Mississippi State football, whether positive or negative, I always start with the same question: Do you know who the winningest coach in Mississippi State history is? And most people, with any kind of knowledge immediately answer correctly saying Jackie Sherrill. But I then follow up with another question that leaves most people confused. I ask: Do you know what his record was? He was 75-75-2...
The GREATEST coach in Bulldog football history was .500!!! We are talking about a team that has ZERO history!!! So before you go off writing this season off as a complete failure, try to find perspective. Dan Mullen became the 4th winningest coach in school history IN ONLY 4 YEARS. And don't get me wrong, I hate losing more than anyone, but it happens especially in the SEC. In fact things sucked pretty bad the last 5 games of the season. But that shows our culture is slowly changing. This season, we won 8 games. You know what 8 wins seasons did to coaching staffs in years past? It got them all raises. You know what it did this year? It got people fired.
Whether you realize it or not, you perception of this team has changed. Losing is no longer an option. Something that used to be the norm and we would laugh at (remember the Maine), now makes us sick. If you add up Jackie Sherrill's last 3 years in Starkville up, you would have seen 8 victories. We got to see that many in 2012 alone. Don't take things for granted, because success may not be around forever.
Bowl Prediction Record: 21-8 (Pathetic)
Final Top 10:
10. Florida
9. Louisville
8. Florida State
7. Clemson
6. South Carolina
5. Stanford
4. Oregon
3. Georgia
2. Texas A&M
1. Alabama
And yes you read that correctly. There is no Notre Dame in my top 10. They were proven to be frauds and do not deserve to be there.
I want to thank you all again for reading this year. I'll be breaking down each team and the season that was before too long. Hope you guys enjoyed this season as much as I did.
